Quality health care is critical to successful family planning. After all, healthier mothers means healthier children and families, lower-risk pregnancies, and decreased infant and maternal mortality.
That’s why the United States introduced the Title X program in 1970. Title X offers grants to health centers that provide family planning services – such as cancer and sexually transmitted infection screenings, pregnancy testing, and well-woman exams – in order to make these services more affordable and accessible.
Unfortunately, for too long, abortion businesses like Planned Parenthood have abused Title X, claiming that killing infants in the womb is somehow essential health care. It’s worked, too: Planned Parenthood receives $500 million in taxpayer dollars each year.
But things are changing.
On Friday, President Trump announced that his administration will reinstate regulations that separate abortion from the Title X funding program—keeping Title X taxpayer dollars from flowing to Planned Parenthood and other abortion businesses.
This is great news for the pro-life community that has long acknowledged that the cruel and inhumane practice of ripping children from their mother’s wombs should never be confused for family planning.
“Americans’ hard-earned tax dollars shouldn’t be used to support abortion. We commend the Trump administration for making good on its promise to ensure this no longer happens,” said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner regarding the announcement. “The Protect Life Rule won’t cut funding for health care clinics by one penny. It will simply ensure women and their families get the most robust care at facilities like community and rural healthcare centers, which exponentially outnumber Planned Parenthood locations nationally 20-1 and are not tainted by constant scandals and misdeeds.”
For decades, Planned Parenthood has falsely presented itself as everything but the nation’s leading abortion provider, overselling its non-abortion services and claiming that it really focuses on women’s health. In reality, Planned Parenthood offers significantly fewer medical services for underprivileged women compared to federally qualified health centers. In fact, the number of cancer screenings and prevention services that Planned Parenthood provides has declined the past three years.
The abortion giant is even less help if you actually want to become a parent.
Back in 2017, Live Action released an investigative video showing that while most Planned Parenthood locations included “prenatal care” under their list of services online, very few of them actually offered it. (The goal of prenatal care is a healthy mother and baby and a successful birth.)
In fact, of the 97 Planned Parenthood facilities that Live Action called, only five actually offered prenatal care. At most Planned Parenthood facilities, women can’t even get an ultrasound unless they are getting an abortion.
And adoption? In 2017, Planned Parenthood commited 82 abortions for every adoption referral they made.
It all boils down to one key fact: Planned Parenthood focuses on abortion. And abortion is not family planning.
Planned Parenthood can protest all it wants. In an email to Planned Parenthood supporters, Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, claimed that the rule would “restrict people's ability to access basic preventive care.”
But this rule is about more and better health care—not less. That’s what we get when we redirect taxpayer funds from the abortionist’s pockets and back to real health care providers where it belongs. And that’s something we should all celebrate.
