BLOGNote to Women’s March Organizers: Pro-Life is Pro-Woman

By Marissa Mayer Posted on: | January 20, 2017

You may have heard that that the much-hyped Women’s March on Washington, set to take place in D.C.  the day after the presidential inauguration, has removed a pro-life group from its list of partners. In a statement, they called the organization in question, New Wave Feminists, “anti-choice” and said the March platform is “pro-choice.”

Frankly, this isn’t that surprising. As Newsbusters reported, one of the March’s co-chairs, Linda Sarsour, was not shy about her affinity for the world’s largest abortion chain. “Hands off Planned Parenthood and our reproductive rights,” she said when recently asked about the March’s most important issues.

And you know what? The Women’s March on Washington should be free to promote whatever beliefs or messages they want—because we live in a country that protects free speech, free expression, and freedom of association. It’s the same right we are defending for our clients – the right to live and work consistently with their beliefs and values. That is what being a “vibrant and diverse” society is truly about.

But here’s the real trouble: For a movement that claims to be all about bringing women together and “defending the most marginalized among us,” their promotion of abortion and Planned Parenthood are steps in the wrong direction.

The Racist History of Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is shrouded in a history of eugenics, thanks to its founder Margaret Sanger. Sanger advocated using birth control and abortion to create a “cleaner race,” which would reduce the “human weeds,” including the poor, the handicapped or disabled, and the non-white. This certainly doesn’t sound like they have much interest in defending the most marginalized among us, does it?

Abortion is Used to Control Women

Abortion has been used time and again to suppress and control women. The truth is that many women never had a choice. From women who are taken by their abusers to Planned Parenthood in order to hide sexual abuse or threatened with physical harm if they refuse to get an abortion, to women whose families have threatened to disown them if they give birth to their baby, many women feel pressured to get an abortion.

And sadly, abortionists like Planned Parenthood continue to enable abusers. Alliance Defending Freedom released a report in 2015 that details Planned Parenthood’s extensive history of ignoring child sexual abuse and failing to report the rape of young girls. How is that defending women’s rights?

Women’s Rights at Every Stage of Life

Being pro-life means standing up for women’s rights at every stage of life. Sex-selective abortion is a worldwide practice that is used to dominate and oppress women. From India’s “vanishing girls” to Armenia’s “society of single men,” not to mention China’s disastrous one-child and two-child policies, the slaughter of infant females has not abated, skewing the female world population. And while the practice is generally frowned upon in the United States, there is no federal law banning sex-selective abortion. Talk about a “war on women.”

Pro-Life is About Empowering Women

Today's culture tells women that their unborn children are a threat to their freedom, that embracing motherhood means giving up on their goals and dreams, and that abortion will make their problems disappear. These women are being lied to and preyed upon by a billion-dollar abortion industry that doesn't care that abortion harms women and kills children. They want women to believe that they can’t have it all—that they can’t overcome challenges—that abortion is the answer. But women are strong and resilient and capable of so much more than Big Abortion gives them credit for. They deserve better than abortion. They deserve the truth.
