BLOGIndicted Prolife Advocates Gain Public Support

"You do not need to accept everything as true, you only have to accept it as necessary."

    - Franz Kafka, The Trial

As Sean Davis, co-founder of The Federalist, shared on twitter, the novel depicting a justice system where the accused is assumed guilty until proven innocent seemed applicable on Monday:

David Daleiden and Susan Merritt, the two undercover journalists from the Center for Medical Progress who produced the authenticated video series capturing Planned Parenthood officials haggling over the price of baby parts were indicted on Monday by a Texas grand jury for the very practice they were exposing. The jury is charging David with a misdemeanor for purchasing human organs, and both David and Susan with a felony of tampering with drivers’ licenses to assume undercover identities.

The jury did not charge Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, yet the verified videos depicted Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast’s director of research appearing to admit to several illegal actions and ethical violations: “If we alter our process, and we are able to obtain intact fetal cadavers . . . We bake that into our contract, and our protocol, that . . . we deviate from our standard [of care] in order to do that,” she says in the 5th Center for Medical Progress video.

In response, LifeSiteNews created an online petition encouraging the grand jury to drop all the charges against David and Susan that gained over 28,000 signatures in 15 hours. As of today, that number had reached almost 95,000.

Congressman Diane Black, the author of the Defund Planned Parenthood Act of 2015, stated her support: “It is a sad day in America when those who harvest the body parts of aborted babies escape consequences for their actions, while the courageous truth-tellers who expose their misdeeds are handed down a politically motivated indictment instead. Just days after tens of thousands of pro-life Americans participated in the March for Life to urge legal protection for the unborn, this senseless decision is a grim reminder of the work yet to be done.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a statement that the investigation into Planned Parenthood will continue. “The State of Texas will continue to protect life, and I will continue to support legislation prohibiting the sale or transfer of fetal tissue.”

In a press release of his own, David Daleiden explained: “The Center for Medical Progress uses the same undercover techniques that investigative journalists have used for decades in exercising our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and of the press, and follows all applicable laws. We respect the processes of the Harris County District Attorney, and note that buying fetal tissue requires a seller as well. Planned Parenthood still cannot deny the admissions from their leadership about fetal organ sales captured on video for all the world to see.”

The full versions of the Center for Medical Progress videos are available on Youtube, and have been investigated and authenticated by leading forensic research company Coalfire. Planned Parenthood’s own analysis determined that there was no “widespread evidence of video manipulation” and no evidence of any audio manipulation.

Eight states have moved to redirect funding from Planned Parenthood to other non-controversial federally qualified health centers as a result of the videos. More issues continue to come to light, such as the recent discovery that the University of Wisconsin received aborted baby parts from Planned Parenthood, despite the fact that both UW and Planned Parenthood publically denied any exchange.

In the face of repeated scandals, it’s clear that even this indictment can’t erase the truth about Planned Parenthood (#DefundPP).
