What's at stake
- Affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
- Promoting the importance of both mothers and fathers.
- Protecting the voters’ rights to direct social policy concerning marriage and family.
Michigan voters adopted a state constitutional amendment affirming the state’s enduring definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman and prohibiting the state from creating or recognizing any other marriage-like status. Two women, represented by the ACLU and other activist groups, are challenging that law in court. They asked a federal judge to order the state to permit same-sex marriage and allow them to adopt each other’s children.
Alliance Defending Freedom and its allies came to marriage’s defense when the court rejected Michigan’s efforts to dismiss the case. In a friend of the court brief submitted on behalf of Michigan Family Forum, Alliance Defending Freedom explained that research has proven what everyone knows: the best environment for raising children is with their biological parents. A mother and father not only provide the safest environment for their children, they also possess different parental skills that complement each other and uniquely benefit children. Michigan thus, like every other state, has an important interest in promoting marriage between one man and one woman.
While the federal judge ruled against marriage and the people of Michigan, that ruling is on appeal and Alliance Defending Freedom and its allies will continue to defend marriage in Michigan and other states where it is under attack.
