Barronelle Stutzman’s story

After much anticipation, the Washington State Supreme Court has punished Barronelle Stutzman for peacefully operating her business consistently with her faith. Barronelle's continuing struggle for religious freedom should be alarming not only to every Christian, but to every American who cherishes freedom.

Barronelle is a floral artist … and a grandmother. You’d never expect to see someone like her at the center of a firestorm. But she is being sued both professionally and personally by the Washington State attorney general and the ACLU.

This ruling could result in her losing everything she owns — her business, her home, and her life’s savings. Everything.

Why has Barronelle been targeted?

It all began when a longtime friend and client, Rob Ingersoll, asked her to create custom floral arrangements for his same-sex wedding.

Barronelle had lovingly served this client for many years. But she affirms the biblical teaching, as people across the globe and throughout history have, that marriage is the sacred union of a man and a woman. She could not help celebrate her friend’s wedding because it would violate her convictions. Out of kindness, and because they had been friends for many years, she referred him to other excellent florists in the area.

“As deeply fond as I am of Rob, my relationship with Jesus is everything to me.
Without Christ I can do nothing.”

The threat to Barronelle’s religious freedom is a threat to your religious freedom.

Activists are using her case to threaten our religious freedom.

After Rob’s partner told Facebook friends about Barronelle’s decision, Barronelle began receiving hate mail, angry phone calls, and even death threats. The Washington State attorney general learned about the social media post and decided to sue Barronelle and use his massive resources to make an example of her. In 2015, a state trial court ruled against her.

But, with your help, Alliance Defending Freedom is determined to keep fighting for Barronelle.

ADF appealed to the Washington State Supreme Supreme Court. After much anticipation, that court also ruled against her in February 2017, punishing her for peacefully operating her business consistently with her faith.

We said all along that we would fight on behalf of Barronelle all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary. And so, last year, we asked the Supreme Court to consider Barronelle's case.

You can make a difference to help Barronelle get justice

Will you stand with Barronelle, and with Christians across the country who are being punished for their faith? The cost of preparing for and litigating cases like this can be great. That’s particularly true here, because both the state and the ACLU have filed lawsuits. If Barronelle’s case is heard by the U.S. Supreme Court, the cost to defend her will increase exponentially.

Thanks be to God, generous Ministry Friends have given a $2 million matching grant to help provide a strong legal defense for Barronelle and other Christians like her.

Through the power of the match, your gift today will have twice the impact. Every dollar you give will be matched dollar for dollar up to $2 million!

Please help as generously as you are able. Through your help, we are able to provide the strongest possible legal defense in the year ahead for Christians like Barronelle who are attacked for their faith.

When Christians stand together, pray together, and unite in action, we can defeat those who would deny our religious freedom.

It is vitally important to persevere.

Please give online now to have your gift doubled. There’s more than just Barronelle’s religious freedom at stake here. As her ADF attorney Kristen Waggoner said, if the trial court’s view is correct, then freedom of conscience for “all citizens is fair game for the government.”

Your gift will be doubled by a matching grant

Alliance Defending Freedom has established a strong record of success in defending your religious freedom.

We’ve won nearly 80% of our litigated cases — and played an important role in 52 victories at the U.S. Supreme Court. But your help is critically needed now. Because, for Barronelle and many others, the fight is not over.

God has shown us time and time again that when we stand together to protect religious freedom, we can be victorious. But protecting religious freedom isn’t “someone else’s fight.” It’s your fight. It’s our fight.

And your gift today will be doubled.

Please give generously today to defend Barronelle and to protect your religious freedom too.

About Alliance Defending Freedom

Alliance Defending Freedom is an alliance-building, non-profit legal organization that advocates for the right of people to freely live out their faith.

ADF was launched in 1994 by 35 ministry leaders, including Dr. James Dobson, and our late friends, Dr. D. James Kennedy, Dr. Bill Bright, and Larry Burkett.

By God’s grace, ADF has grown from the prayers of those godly leaders to become a major force in the legal battle for religious freedom, prevailing in hundreds of cases in state and federal courts, and playing important roles in 52 victories at the Supreme Court of the United States.
