Senators attempt, fail to force a vote on deceptively named ‘Equality Act’

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom General Counsel Kristen Waggoner regarding a failed attempt by a minority of U.S. senators to bypass the committee process and resurrect the deceptively named “Equality Act,” legislation that would be used to set back protections for women on the playing field, at work, and in showers and locker rooms by decades, as well as inhibit the ability of Americans to live consistent with their beliefs:

“Laws should respect the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of every citizen, but the so-called ‘Equality Act’ that some senators have tried to force through the U.S. Senate fails to meet this essential standard. This bill undermines women’s equality by denying female athletes fair competition in sports and forcing them to share private, intimate spaces with men who identify as female. Emboldened by the U.S. Supreme Court’s problematic decision Monday, some activists want to con Americans into believing that disagreement on important matters such as marriage and human sexuality is a form of discrimination that requires the government to enforce one view over another, but that is antithetical to a free society. As Sens. Josh Hawley, James Lankford, and Mike Lee rightly explained, this bill undermines human dignity by threatening the fundamental freedoms of speech, religion, and conscience that the First Amendment guarantees for every citizen. Americans deserve better than the profound inequality that this intolerant, deceptively titled legislation offers.”
