Fighting for Freedom While Standing for Life

Heidi Matzke, Blayne Wittig, and Josh McClure all know the power of the words, “You’re pregnant.” As directors for separate pro-life pregnancy centers in California, they’ve witnessed how life-altering those words can be for a woman facing an unplanned pregnancy. And they know that what each woman does in that moment will have a profound impact on the rest of her life.

That’s why their pregnancy centers exist: to provide hope and help to women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy. But Heidi, Blayne, and Josh are not alone. Pro-life pregnancy centers throughout California share that same mission. They give women the facts about all of their options—they give women the truth.

But the State of California passed a law targeting these pregnancy centers and forcing them to contradict their pro-life mission by advertising for the abortion industry—even in their own buildings. As you can imagine, this is not something Heidi, Blayne, Josh, or any pro-life pregnancy center can do.

Watch the video below to hear more about this burden and learn about how the case of NIFLA v. Becerra at the U.S. Supreme Court impacts their freedom of speech.

Your Freedom of Speech Is on the Line

Words matter. And no one should be forced by the government to use their words to promote something they don’t believe in. If the government can coercively put its words into one person’s mouth—in this case, pro-life pregnancy centers—then freedom for all of us is at risk. In fact, California is not alone in passing such a law. The desire to force free citizens to speak politically correct messages is threatening our liberties across the nation. Thankfully, the First Amendment protects freedom of speech for everyone, not just those whose speech is considered popular.

On March 20, 2018, Alliance Defending Freedom stood before the United States Supreme Court and argued on behalf of our ally the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) and its affiliated pregnancy centers in California. We asked the high court to protect freedom of speech—not just for these pregnancy centers, but for anyone who would be forced by the government to speak a message that contradicts their sincerely held beliefs. The outcome of the case could not only affect the freedom of speech for every American—it could save innocent lives.
