By Michael Farris, Jr. Posted on: | March 08, 2019

In case you haven’t heard the news yet, Jack Phillips is victorious once again over vicious attacks from the state of Colorado! You won’t believe what commissioners said about his faith, even after the U.S. Supreme Court rebuked them. Plus the United Methodist Church upholds biblical marriage, two professors tackle religious tests of public officials, and truth is shed on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivor Protection Act. All of this from the Alliance Alert team!

Associated Press: Colorado and cakeshop owner end legal battle

In a major victory for all Americans, the state of Colorado has announced it will dismiss its case against Jack Phillips, stopping its six and a half years of hostility toward him because of his beliefs. The state’s hostility toward Jack for his beliefs was undeniable. Just last week, ADF attorneys uncovered statements from a 2018 public meeting in which two commissioners voiced their support for comments that a previous commissioner, Diann Rice, made in 2015. Rice called religious freedom “a despicable piece of rhetoric,” a comment which the U.S. Supreme Court sternly condemned in ruling in favor of Phillips last year.” While the state finally appears to be getting the message that its anti‐religious hostility has no place in our country, its decision to target Jack forced him to spend years tied up in legal proceedings. Jack’s victory is great news for everyone’s freedom.

The Washington Post: Senators should stop asking about judicial nominees’ religious beliefs

Senators who probe a judicial candidate about his or her religious beliefs step over the line that bars religious tests for public office. Paul J. McNulty and John A. Sparks of Grove City College explore the historical significance of constitutional and court decisions that specifically prohibit calling a person's faith into question as a test for office. Questions regarding religious beliefs and their interplay with civil law issues are not about a person's character, McNulty and Sparks argue, but improperly make a candidate’s religious beliefs into a public issue.

Marriage and the Family

USA Today: United Methodist delegates reject plan allowing same-sex marriage, LGBT clergy

In a close and largely unexpected decision, the United Methodist Church voted to uphold biblical marriage during the church's General Conference earlier this week. A majority of global delegates rejected the "One Church Plan," which would have allowed non-celibate LGBT members to serve as clergy, and would have endorsed same-sex marriage within the church. While the western-influenced "progressive" wing of the church attempted to minimalize or even eliminate the biblical understanding of marriage from the church, on a global scale the church voted to protect and maintain biblical teachings in the church.

National Review: Debunking Media Falsehoods on the Born-Alive Bill

Alexandra Desanctis puts forward evidence that opponents of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in both the Senate and the media have told outright lies about the bill, which was sponsored by Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE). Before the bill went up for a vote, Senate Democrats asserted that the bill would restrict abortion access, while the few major media outlets that reported on the bill at all claimed it was "anti-abortion" and redundant. But as Desanctis writes at National Review, those baseless claims are not only untrue, but are being conjured in open support of infanticide.
