BLOGA Massachusetts Law Threatened This Church’s Outreach to Help Victims of Domestic Violence

By Sarah Kramer Posted on: | August 21, 2017

When Pastor Esteban Carrasco and his church, House of Destiny Ministries, looked around at their community, they saw deep hurt and need. Instead of sitting back, though, they came up with some ideas about how they could best love and serve the people around them.

After all, as Christians we are called to love our neighbor. House of Destiny puts that into practice.

One way they wanted to serve those around them was to open a women’s shelter for victims of domestic violence. And they bought a property to do just that.

Not only is it something that Esteban’s church is passionate about, but it’s also something that is personal to Esteban and his wife. His wife’s grandmother was a survivor of domestic abuse.

But in 2016, Massachusetts passed a law that put their shelter in jeopardy. This gender identity law mandates that men have access to women’s facilities. And it specifically stated that churches must comply, regardless of their religious beliefs. That means that Massachusetts churches would be forced to open intimate facilities to members of the opposite sex… including the shelter.

Thankfully, in response to an Alliance Defending Freedom lawsuit representing four courageous Massachusetts churches, including House of Destiny Ministries, the state backed down. It will not apply its policies to churches, so they can continue to operate consistently with their beliefs.

As for the shelter, the women they will house can feel comfortable knowing that the state will not force them to live with a biological male when they are in a vulnerable, recovering state.
