Yesterday, the Texas Attorney General’s Office announced that Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, the Texas and Louisiana based affiliate of the world’s largest abortion business, would write Texas taxpayers a $1.4 million check for “fraudulently overbilling” the state’s Medicaid program.
Coincidentally (ahem), just last week Planned Parenthood announced that it is closing three of its Texas facilities, including the Bryan, Texas clinic where Alliance Defending Freedom client Abby Johnson worked. In its release, it blamed “budget cuts.” Yes, being forced to repay $1.4 million to settle a Medicaid fraud investigation will put a bit of a dent in one’s budget. Today’s revelation should put those clinic closures in a new light.
While this fraud settlement by Planned Parenthood will grab headlines, this is hardly the first time it has been caught taking taxpayer funds it isn’t entitled to. But if you’re having a hard time keeping up with all of Planned Parenthood’s misuse of taxpayer dollars, that’s understandable. Fortunately, Alliance Defending Freedom has compiled a report to Congress identifying the known government audits of Planned Parenthood affiliates. In just this handful of audits in a few states, Planned Parenthood has been tabbed with almost $9 million in fraud, waste and abuse of taxpayer dollars.
This report and settlement doesn’t even include the ongoing litigation that Alliance Defending Freedom is conducting in three significant Planned Parenthood fraud cases. Over $5.7 million in fraud is alleged by Abby Johnson against the same Planned Parenthood affiliate that has to repay U.S. and Texas taxpayers. In another case, a former Planned Parenthood director in Iowa, Susan Thayer, alleged $28 million in fraud. And in a third case, over $300 million is alleged in Washington state. Additional cases by Alliance Defending Freedom allies also include over $200 million in fraud alleged by California Planned Parenthood affiliates.
Imagine the real health care that could have been provided with that money, or simply how nice it would be to have that money back in your pocket.
This is merely the tip of the iceberg, but it should be a wake-up call for those who continue to defend Big Abortion. Planned Parenthood is not about women’s health, it’s about money.
