Starting this month, Georgia voters will head to the polls once again to vote in a run-off election for two seats in the U.S. Senate.
But make no mistake, this election doesn’t only affect Georgia voters. It will impact us all.
You see, the run-off election in Georgia will determine control of the U.S. Senate. Currently, Republicans hold 50 seats and Democrats hold 48. If Republicans win one or both, they will retain control of the Senate. If the Democrats win both seats, the Republicans and Democrats would each hold 50 seats. And in the event of a 50-50 tie, the vice president casts the tiebreaking vote. If that tiebreaking vote is Kamala Harris, it would mean a Democrat-controlled Senate as well.
Democrats already control the U.S. House of Representatives, and if Joe Biden is inaugurated, they will control the executive branch as well. A Democrat-controlled Senate would give Democrats trifecta control of the government—that is, control of both houses of Congress and the presidency—thus empowering the Biden Administration to push through an agenda with significant implications to issues regarding the sanctity of life and religious freedom in America.
Here are just a few of his campaign promises that could impact issues you care about.
- The Biden campaign promised to codify abortion on demand into federal law , to work to roll back state-level abortion restrictions , and to use taxpayer funds for abortions.
- Biden has promised to push for the passage of the so-called Equality Act within the first 100 days of his presidency, which would allow men who identify as women to compete against women in athletics and to use female-only shelters, showers, changing rooms, and restrooms. It would also eliminate religious exemptions for organizations that believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman.
- Biden has said he will urge state governors to regulate how businesses and religious organizations can use their facilities in a new “national lockdown” to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The past several months have already given us a taste of what that can look like as some government officials have abused their authority by targeting churches.
On top of that, proposals to expand the U.S. Supreme Court could much more easily become reality. That could dramatically affect the outcome of many legal cases.
No matter whether you live in Georgia, we encourage you to learn about the issues at stake in this runoff election and where each candidate stands. Alliance Defending Freedom has put together a voting guide to help you do just that. And please pray that God’s will be done for this election on January 5.
