On October 11, Attorney General William Barr spoke at the Notre Dame Law School. In his remarks, the attorney general highlighted the importance of the work groups like Alliance Defending Freedom do to defend religious freedom in the United States.
Attorney General Barr discussed the decline of religious freedoms over the past 50 years and the negative consequences that accompany the removal of religion in the public square. Right now, some are using the law as a weapon against religious liberty. We are seeing people like floral artist Barronelle Stutzman being forced to choose between their convictions and their work.
As the attorney general makes clear, a society without religious freedom is not progress, it is regress. We have the distinct duty to defend the freedom to live out our religious beliefs.
Instead of thinking of Attorney General Barr’s remarks as a doomsday announcement, we must look at it as a call to action. Alliance Defending Freedom has been responding to this call for the past 25 years.
ADF has been fighting for our religious freedoms in state and federal courts nationwide, and we have been blessed with great success.
When California, the attorney general explained, “sought to require pro-life pregnancy centers to provide notices of abortion rights,” ADF took a case to the Supreme Court and won. When the federal government tried to force religious employers to violate their sincerely held religious views by funding contraceptive and abortifacient coverage in their health plans, ADF got involved.
And today, when some state governments are attempting to compel religious individuals to subscribe to practices, or to express viewpoints, that are incompatible with their beliefs, ADF is fighting back. We are currently standing up for Barronelle Stutzman of Arlene’s Flowers, Jay and Sandy Smith of Cedar Park Assembly of God, and Tom Rost of R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes.
We know that the battle for religious liberty isn’t just for a few to fight. It’s a responsibility that belongs to all of us.
We rely on your support, your prayers, and your witness in your communities to uphold religious freedom. We couldn’t do this important work without you.
