BLOGNews You Should Know: These Nuns Are Back in Court

By Michael Farris, Jr. Posted on: | May 24, 2019

The inaccurately named “Equality Act” passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week, and many people—from a Missouri congresswoman to the ADF Deputy Director of Media Communications—are sounding the alarm. Also, two states are trying to force Little Sisters of the Poor to pay for abortifacients against their will, and progressives are trying to make pro-life Democrats a thing of the past. All of this from the Alliance Alert team.

The Daily Caller: By Bowing To Gender ‘Identity,’ The Equality Act Destroys Equal Treatment

If the so-called "Equality Act" becomes law, everybody loses. ADF Deputy Director of Media Communications Jay Hobbs uses real-world examples of female athletes losing to biological males, survivors of abuse being forced to share private spaces with men, and more to show that the Equality Act will strip away the foundational freedoms at the bedrock of American life. By redefining “sex” to include “sexual orientation and gender identity,” people of all religious backgrounds will be forced to violate their beliefs, and women will lose their hard-fought protections under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. While the bill is unlikely to make it through the Senate, Hobbs points out the brazen disregard for liberty that hundreds of politicians (and major corporations) have shown for the very Americans who form their constituency and customer base.

Religious Freedom

The Washington Examiner: Democrats force Little Sisters of the Poor into court again

In the battle to protect conscience rights, some state officials have decided to make an example out of nuns rather than respect their First Amendment right to religious liberty. After the Trump administration issued a rule through the Department of Health and Human Services that protects groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor from having to provide birth control, state attorneys general for California and Pennsylvania sued to reverse it. In the wake of oral arguments for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania v. Trump, attorneys for the Little Sisters of the Poor commented that "Pennsylvania has not provided an explanation of why the government needs nuns to carry out its goals" to mandate abortifacients in employer-provided healthcare.

Marriage and the Family

The Hill: The Equality Act would lead to the death of women's rights

Rep. Vicky Hartzler of Missouri holds nothing back when it comes to criticizing the so-called "Equality Act." From female athletes, to female locker rooms, to safe-spaces for women escaping abuse from men, Rep. Hartzler shows the wide-ranging damage the Equality Act will do to women's rights. Because the Equality Act erases women's rights, she calls on members of both sides of the aisle to reject this dangerous piece of legislation.

Fox News: Progressive caucus co-chair calls for 'strong primary challenges' against anti-abortion Dems

As the national debate surrounding abortion continues to boil, pro-life Democrat politicians are finding themselves in the crosshairs. Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) recently stated, "You can't say you're a Democrat ... if you're against abortion," which highlights the divide between remaining pro-life Democrats and their colleagues who enjoy their party’s support as they tout third-trimester abortions. This comes at a time when Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, has indicated that he plans to sign a bill that will protect life in the womb once a heartbeat is detected.
