This week, we explore a common theme: authoritarian power grabs. In Michigan, a funeral home is being targeted by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over its employee dress code. Also in Michigan, the state attorney general is forcing religious adoption and foster care providers to fight for their right to operate consistently with their beliefs. In Oregon, a federal judge has blocked a Trump administration rule that takes tax dollars out of the hands of abortionists. And in Congress, some politicians are pushing the so-called “Equality Act,” which threatens freedom for everyone. All of this from the Alliance Alert team.

The Detroit News: EEOC uses my funeral homes to rewrite laws
Tom Rost never dreamed that his small funeral home service would get caught in a national fight in the courts. When a male employee of R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes refused to comply with the company’s dress code and insisted on dressing as a female, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission seized an opportunity to make an example of the funeral home in order to push its idea that "sex" means "gender identity." Now, Rost's case will be heard by the U.S. Supreme Court to see if the EEOC and federal judges have the power to bypass Congress and redefine "sex" in federal nondiscrimination law.
WORLD: Faith-based foster agency fights back
As some religious adoption providers in Michigan are changing placement policies due to pressure from the state attorney general, one provider is fighting for its religious freedom. St. Vincent Catholic Charities maintains a policy affirming that marriage is uniquely between a man and a woman. But a lawsuit against the state of Michigan challenging a law that protected religious adoption providers was settled by the newly-elected attorney general, who now says that St. Vincent cannot continue to serve the state’s foster care and adoption needs because of its beliefs about marriage. St. Vincent’s, faced with being forced from its faith-driven mission, is now bringing a new lawsuit against the state to allow it to continue serving the thousands of children needing its services.

The Federalist: Why The So-Called Equality Act Is A Bait-and-Switch Power Grab
The so-called “Equality Act”—backed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi—is nothing more than a thinly-veiled power grab, writes Stella Morabito at The Federalist. Taking a broad look at the proposed legislation, Morabito shows how it erases individual freedom and gives the state full power to punish anyone who fails to meet the new standards of orthodoxy on sex and marriage. While the bill sows the seeds of social distrust, Morabito says, the Equality Act also strips Americans of First Amendment rights and threatens the rule of law ... all in the name of "equality."

National Review: Oregon Judge to Block Trump Rule Cutting Off Funding to Abortion Providers
A federal judge in Oregon is blocking a Trump administration rule that would stop federal funding of facilities that either perform abortions or refer women to abortion facilities. The judge says the rule is a “ham-fisted approach to public health policy,” and a state attorney claims the rule blocks low-income women from accessing "healthcare." The Trump administration says there is no evidence that defunding abortion providers causes health risks to low-income citizens.
