These past few weeks have been draining.
We have watched lawmakers in New York applaud as they passed legislation to allow abortion up until the moment of birth in many cases. We have watched the governor of Virginia publicly advocate for killing a baby after he or she is born.
But, last week, there was finally some good news.
Thanks to a new rule put in place by Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), we are one step closer to defunding the abortion giant Planned Parenthood!
For years, Planned Parenthood has received funding for family planning services through Title X funding grants. They are able to receive these funds because they separate their family planning services like counseling and birth control from abortion… on paper, at least.
As we all know, in many cases, these services are housed in the same building where abortions are carried out. Yet, Planned Parenthood has continued to get Title X funding.
The new HHS rule, called the Protect Life Rule, changes all of that. A new provision makes it clear that Title X funding cannot go to providing or referring for abortions. The rule also strengthens conscience protections for health care providers who receive Title X funds.
When this takes effect, Planned Parenthood will lose an estimated $60 million in government funds. That is no small number.
Planned Parenthood received over $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars from 2013 to 2015. Worse: according to a congressional report, there is much evidence that they grossly misuse this taxpayer money.
The nation’s number-one abortion provider has also been caught failing to report the sexual abuse of young girls visiting their clinics and selling the body parts of aborted children. The fact that they get even one dime of taxpayer money is unacceptable.
The new HHS rule announced last Friday is a major milestone in defunding Planned Parenthood.
“We commend the Trump administration and HHS for these commonsense reforms,” said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel Denise Burke, “which simply ensure greater compliance with current federal and state laws, safeguard vulnerable and abused women and children, and help protect freedom of conscience for health care workers.”
We are one step closer to ensuring that not a single cent of government money goes to Planned Parenthood’s business of exploiting women and killing children.
And that is something to celebrate.
