One day last September, my friend and fellow mock trial teammate Elizabeth Lapp told me, “You should apply to Areté Academy.” When I asked her what she was talking about, she explained how Areté Academy is a weeklong training program hosted by Alliance Defending Freedom for young Christian professionals entering the spheres of public policy, business, law, and biomedical sciences. She had attended the summer of 2017.
I told her I thought the program sounded fantastic and asked how much it cost. At this point, Elizabeth shocked me by revealing that ADF provided all associated costs for airfare, room, and board during the Academy.
Once I realized there was no catch, I was hooked.
After submitting my application, I anxiously awaited the committee’s decision. When I found out that I had been accepted in April, I excitedly looked forward to the weeklong experience. Three months after my time at Areté came to an end, when I reflect on my time in Arizona, there are three primary reasons why I would encourage any fellow aspiring Christian professional to apply to the Academy.
1. You will be challenged to know why you believe what you believe.
For years, I have said I want to be part of a movement to help lead this nation to following its founding principles. My enrollment in Areté Academy has helped equip me to become an effective advocate for policies based upon Judeo-Christian principles and natural law theory. The sessions at Areté exposed me to world-class, incredible faculty who clearly and effectively explained how to convey natural law arguments in a loving, logical manner.
2. You will be empowered by becoming a part of the Areté community.
Areté allowed me to make connections with fellow conservative, Christian professionals, who will be pursuing careers across the country. I fully intend to remain part of this professional community as I continue into my career by encouraging my fellow Delegates, both from this year’s class and future classes to live the Areté life. Months after the Academy, even though we currently reside all over the United States and abroad, I remain in contact with friends I met at the Academy on a weekly basis. Being a part of this community has encouraged and equipped me to make an impact for the Kingdom through the way I engage with those around me.
3. You will leave ready to make an impact in your community and your country.
As I reflect on my time at Areté, I realize I left Arizona emboldened and empowered to champion Christian virtues in the culture. Rather than only being a weeklong training and networking event, Areté Academy will continue to have ripple effects through the lessons learned and the relationships forged for the remainder of my professional life. As you sit in those sessions, you will be surrounded by a remarkable class of individuals who will shape the course and direction of this nation for years to come.
If you want to learn what it takes to “live the Areté life,” receive this amazing training, and join the Areté community, I encourage you to apply to join the 2019 Class of Delegates at Areté Academy.
Apply by January 29, 2019 for consideration in this summer’s program.
