BLOGNews You Should Know: Churches Forced to Fund Abortions, an Abortion “Sanctuary City,” and More

By Michael Farris, Jr. Posted on: | October 12, 2018

For the past few weeks the news cycle has been dominated by the fight to confirm Justice Kavanaugh, but now that it’s finally behind us, it’s time to catch up on news you might have missed. In California, unelected bureaucrats are forcing health insurance providers to fund elective abortions, causing churches with health plans to fight back. A law that would have added “reproductive health decisions” to the St. Louis, MO, non-discrimination ordinance was struck down in court. And Tennessee’s pro-life Amendment 1 was made effective when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge against it. All of this from our Alliance Alert team!

Times of San Diego: Opinion: California Ignores Religious Freedom in Compelling Churches to Underwrite Abortions

A group of unelected California officials told health insurance carriers in the state that all plans must cover elective abortions—including the plans of churches that believe in the sanctity of life. The Washington Free Beacon: Judge Strikes Down Abortion ‘Sanctuary City’ Ordinance

The City of St. Louis added the phrase "reproductive health decisions" to the city's non-discrimination ordinance, but the move to make the city the first "sanctuary city" for abortions was struck down in court. The challenge was brought on by a pro-life pregnancy center, and the court ruled that the added phrase violated Missouri's Religious Freedom Restoration Act and federal law.

The Washington Post: State Department changes visa rules for same-sex partners of foreign diplomats

The State Department recently changed a family visa policy that, under former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, allowed diplomats in the United States to obtain a family visa for their domestic partner. LGBT advocates criticized the change, but the State Department says this treats same-sex and opposite-sex couples equally since the Obama-era policy didn't apply to unmarried opposite-sex couples.

The Tennessean: US Supreme Court won't hear challenge to Tennessee's abortion measure, Amendment 1

After Tennessee voters approved Amendment 1, which ensured that no right to abortion would be guaranteed under the state constitution, in 2014, pro-abortion advocates tried to nullify the measure in court. The U.S. Supreme Court recently declined to hear the appeal of pro-abortion advocates, allowing the law to stand.
