BLOGWhat If Jack Wins His Case at the Supreme Court?

By Sarah Kramer Posted on: | May 30, 2018

Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips has lost 40 percent of his business and over half of his employees, and he has had to endure death threats made against him and his family.

Why? Simply because he declined to use his artistic talents to celebrate an event against his faith.

In 2012, two men walked into Jack’s shop, Masterpiece Cakeshop, to request a custom-designed cake for their same-sex wedding. Jack politely declined, offering to sell them anything else in his store or to design a cake for a different event. Still, they picketed his store and then sued him. Alliance Defending Freedom has been representing Jack in this legal battle for the past five years, and the U.S. Supreme Court heard his case on December 5.

All Jack wants to do is to honor God by running his business in a way that is consistent with his faith. But he has another motivation for taking this stand as well: He is defending the right of all Americans to live and work according to their beliefs.

That’s why we should all be rooting for a win in this case.

A victory in this case would likely mean that Jack could return to doing what he loves, designing custom wedding cakes. But it could also have impact far outside the four walls of Masterpiece Cakeshop. A win in Jack’s case could have implications for all Americans. As ADF Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner says:

A win could “affirm the right of all Americans to be able to express ideas and to live consistent with their religious convictions.”

If the Supreme Court upholds Jack’s religious and artistic freedom, that is good news for all of us – no matter your beliefs. We all benefit from having the freedom to choose which messages to express and which events to celebrate.

Freedom for Jack means freedom for us all.
