What a day, and what a showing at the U.S. Supreme Court!
Alliance Defending Freedom had the privilege of defending our ally the
National Institute of Family and Life Advocates and its affiliated
pregnancy centers before the Supreme Court. We are challenging a California law
that forces pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise for the abortion industry.
This morning, we asked the Supreme Court to uphold the free speech of these
pregnancy centers, which will in turn protect free speech for everyone.
We are thankful to all of those who braved the crazy weather and came to show their
support for California’s pro-life pregnancy centers. Your presence outside the
Supreme Court sent a message loud and clear: We will not allow the government to trample over our right to free
Pro-life pregnancy centers exist to provide help and hope
for men and women facing an unplanned pregnancy. They offer free services to
the women and families who come to them for help by providing material
resources (such as diapers and formula) as well as education and counseling.
The pregnancy centers that are medically licensed can offer pregnancy tests,
ultrasounds, and STI testing.
These pregnancy centers work to help remove some of the
barriers that keep women from choosing life for their babies. And while these
centers do tell women the truth about all of their options, they don’t
facilitate or refer for abortions. Doing so would violate their mission.
But in 2015, California passed a law forcing pro-life
pregnancy centers to advertise that the state will provide free or low-cost
abortions, including a phone number where women can call to get more
information. This law directly contradicts what these centers are trying to do.
That’s why we’re asking the United States Supreme Court to protect freedom of
speech—not just for these pregnancy centers, but for us all.
The First Amendment was designed to
protect everyone—not just those whose viewpoints line up with what the
government approves. This case isn't about whether or not you are pro-life; it
is about whether the government can compel citizens to speak against their
deeply held beliefs.
We are increasingly
seeing the First Amendment under attack, not only in California but also across
the country. Here are just a few examples:
- California’s law forcing pro-life pregnancy
centers to speak a message against their beliefs is not the only one of its
kind. Both Illinois
have passed similar laws, and ADF has filed lawsuits in both states.
- College and university officials across the
country are silencing students whose viewpoints they do not like. The ADF Center for Academic Freedom
is hard at work to ensure the First Amendment rights of these students are
- In another
case, the government is using zoning laws to keep churches from worshipping
and sharing the Gospel in their own building downtown.
professionals across the country are told that if they use their artistic talents
to celebrate events and promote messages that are consistent with their
religious beliefs, they must do the same for those that violate their religious
