BLOGHow the “Alliance” in Alliance Defending Freedom Works

By Sarah Kramer Posted on: | December 28, 2017

God was preparing the pieces – and the people – for the Masterpiece Cakeshop case before the same-sex couple suing Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips even stepped into Jack’s shop.

In 2011, Colorado attorney Nicolle Martin was listening to The Hugh Hewitt Show. That particular day, Alliance Defending Freedom Founder Alan Sears was on the show talking about the work of ADF. She decided to look into it more and in 2012 she attended the ADF Legal Academy, where she received training on constitutional law and became an ADF Allied Attorney.

At the event, the attendees were challenged to do “one thing” to help defend religious freedom, whether it be writing a letter or helping a church set up its bylaws.

When Nicolle got back home, she started reading about Jack in the papers. He had declined to design a custom cake celebrating a same-sex marriage. And even though he offered to sell the couple anything else in his shop or design a cake for a different event, they filed a complaint against him with the government.

Nicolle decided to make Jack’s situation her “one thing.” She drove to his shop the next day to talk to him about ADF and let him know that he was not alone.

And she could tell him that with confidence.

Nicolle is one of the more than 3,000 Allied Attorneys of ADF. These dedicated attorneys donate their time outside of their practice to work on issues pertaining to religious freedom – and they do it pro bono, without earning a dime. ADF also works with a variety organizations and individuals across the country to ensure that religious liberty, the sanctity of life, and marriage and family are preserved.

To get a glimpse of how the alliance works, you need only look at some of the events leading up to the Supreme Court oral arguments earlier this month:

  • In September, at least 45 amicus briefs were filed with the Supreme Court on Jack’s behalf, including the support of 20 states, 479 creative professionals, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
  • In October, the Frederick Douglass Foundation sponsored a press conference of numerous African American leaders voicing their support for Jack.
  • In November, our friends at Colorado Christian University put on a religious freedom rally for Jack leading up to arguments where hundreds came to show their support and pray for Jack.
  • Our friends at the Radiance Foundation hosted a #JusticeforJack rally outside of the Supreme Court on the day of oral arguments. Christian and conservative leaders showed up to voice their support for Jack.

The alliance was at work through all five years of Jack’s case, from the time Jack went before the Colorado Civil Rights Commission to when he stood before the U.S. Supreme Court. A key part of the alliance, and what makes all of this possible, is you – our Ministry Friends. You have been a steady force supporting Jack the past five years through your prayers and your generous giving.

Would you consider continuing to stand with Jack and ADF as we await a decision from the Supreme Court?

Your support is what allows ADF to continue providing free legal defense to people like Jack whose rights are being threatened. What happens in these cases could impact freedom for all of us. And if you decide to give a year-end gift today, it will be doubled thanks to a matching grant from a generous Ministry Friend.

Thank you for giving generously!
