BLOGMarriage In America: Working With Allies To Wed Ideas To Action

By Alan Sears Posted on: | October 01, 2014

Even the most casual observer of current trends in American society must be aware that the current cultural and political infatuation with carving out special protections and privileges for those in same-sex relationships has wreaked havoc on the nation’s legal landscape.

Courts, legislatures, and executives nationwide continue to abandon the Constitution and ignore the will of most voters in their blind pursuit of political correctness and in-crowd approval. In just a few short years, same-sex relationships have become a specially protected class unto themselves. The most devastating impact of that overnight transformation has been on marriage, which is being "redefined" with complete contempt not only for its biblical purpose, but for thousands of years of social tradition.

Many believers have been slow to realize the enormity of this threat, and its profound implications for our families, our nation, and our liberty. But realization is setting in, and one indication of how earnestly many Christian leaders are working to bring information, understanding, and direction to people of faith on this issue is the national conference being hosted this month by the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The conference, addressing The Gospel, Homosexuality, and the Future of Marriage is being held October 27-29 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee, with Alliance Defending Freedom as a primary sponsor. The list of speakers features a “who’s who” of Southern Baptist leaders, including Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and Russell Moore, president of the ERLC. Distinguished professors, seminary presidents, pastors, and ministry leaders representing denominations, schools, and organizations from around the world will be participating, many with special experience in ministering to those caught up in homosexual behavior and relationships. (Indeed, some of those speaking have been blessed with the grace to overcome these things in their own lives.)

Close allies of Alliance Defending Freedom, like Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family, John Stonestreet of the Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview, Eric Teetsel of the Manhattan Declaration, and Ryan Anderson of the Heritage Foundation will also be addressing the conference, as will two of our ADF senior legal counselors: Erik Stanley (who heads up our Pulpit Initiative) and Kristen Waggoner (Senior Vice President of Legal Services).

Reservations are still available for the conference (Click here for a special discount code) and if you’re able to be in Nashville the last week of this month, I strongly encourage you to be a part of this major event. This is a rare meeting of outstanding minds and thoughtful leadership on one of the most pressing moral, legal, and theological issues of our age – an issue with extraordinary potential to impact your church, your community, your children and grandchildren. It’s an outstanding opportunity for you to learn crucial insights and information that will equip you to defend marriage in the culture and strengthen marriage in your church.

Even if you can’t attend, please join me in praying for all those participating, and that our God would powerfully use the wisdom shared at this gathering to stir the conscience and commitment of His people, and prompt effective action in our ongoing efforts to preserve marriage and religious freedom in America.
