BLOGVIDEO: ABC Citing “Hate Group” Label as Fact is Not Only False, But Irresponsible

ABC News abandoned foundational principles of journalism this week by essentially copying and pasting the title from a hit-piece the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) put out on Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), calling ADF a “hate group.”

But nothing could be further from the truth. ADF Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner went on Fox News to address this claim:

In a time when so many people are up in arms about fake news, ABC’s irresponsible reporting only adds fuel to the fire. First of all, Attorney General Jeff Sessions comments are public, and you can read his remarks on The Federalist. On top of that, citing SPLC as a reputable source is dangerous, as SPLC “hate group” designations have been used in the past to incite violence.

And repeatedly calling ADF a “hate group” – giving ADF no chance to comment – shows just how out-of-touch ABC really is. We are asking that ABC apologize and retract the story.

Alliance Defending Freedom is a Christian legal organization that advocates for the right of all people to peacefully live and work according to their beliefs without fear of government punishment. And we do that at the highest levels – winning seven cases before the U.S. Supreme Court in the past seven years. In fact, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in favor of our client Trinity Lutheran Church just a few weeks ago, making it clear that the government cannot treat people and organizations of faith worse than everyone else.

And today, ADF asked the Supreme Court to hear the case of Washington floral design artist Barronelle Stutzman, who is an excellent example of the people we are privileged to represent. If you know anything about Barronelle’s case, you know that this 72-year-old grandmother happily serves everyone, and employs people from all different backgrounds and beliefs. In fact, the man that is suing her was her customer for nearly 10 years.

It’s a common thread among many of our clients. While our clients happily serve everyone, they cannot use their artistic talents to design custom creations for every event and every message. We need to defend that freedom in our country – which is exactly what ADF is dedicated to doing.

It’s a shame that ABC couldn’t bring themselves to report the real facts, rather than the fake ones.
