BLOGAct Now to Protect Student Privacy – Contact Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos

By Jim Campbell Posted on: | February 22, 2017

Anyone concerned with student privacy rights should contact Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, Betsy DeVos, right away.

Before leaving office, President Obama issued official letters demanding that public schools allow students who identify as the opposite sex to be able to use overnight facilities, locker rooms, and restrooms designated for that sex. Those letters, which still represent the federal government’s official position on this issue, force schools to permit boys professing a female identity to share lodging and shower facilities with girls.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Secretary DeVos plans to rescind those letters. In response, groups opposed to student privacy rights have begun bombarding Secretary DeVos with emails and messages urging her not to reverse the Obama-era edict.

So right now, more than ever, Secretary DeVos needs encouragement to protect student privacy. Please call or email her right away and tell her that there are three reasons she should rescind the prior administration’s unwise and illegal policy.

  1. No student should be forced to share overnight facilities, locker rooms, and restrooms with classmates of the opposite sex.
  2. Sensitive issues like how to respect student privacy rights and the interests of students struggling with gender-identity issues should be decided at the local level by school boards (not by the federal government).
  3. The federal government shouldn’t punish schools that protect the privacy rights of their students.

You can call Secretary DeVos at (202) 401-1576 or send her an email at the link below.
