As a college student, it can be difficult to discern what you should do with your summers between internships, jobs, summer school, and vacations.
But here’s a no-brainer.
Alliance Defending Freedom offers Areté Academy, a one-week training program for college students and recent graduates pursuing careers in law, government, business, and public policy.
Attendees (called “delegates”) have the chance to hear from renowned speakers on topics such as philosophy, biblical worldview, and constitutional jurisprudence, which are then applied to current cultural issues. Students also get the chance to take part in practical application sessions, helping them discern their educational and professional goals and the steps that will help them get there.
And that’s all in one week.
If you’re thinking, how can such a short program be impactful? Consider what our past delegates have taken away from the program:
A Christian Community of Mentors and Peers
Participating in the Areté Academy before starting law school was a thoroughly edifying experience—not only academically, but also spiritually and relationally. Over the course of a week of intellectual engagement, with the speakers as with my fellow delegates, I was inspired by the work God was doing. But Areté doesn't end after the Academy. Though every delegate left to run the race through his or her respective field, we each found support in ADF's godly leaders and in one another. Belonging to such a community continues to encourage me to stand strong and speak truth in an increasingly secular and divisive culture.

An Understanding of How Faith Cultivates Civil Society
In one week, Alliance Defending Freedom provides a robust introduction to the contemporary socio-political climate in the U.S. and identifies opportunities for delegates to live out their faith in this context. The lineup of speakers ranges from law professors to entrepreneurs, so delegates are encouraged to think comprehensively about the life of faith and interacting with civil society. As a pre-law student, this was an invaluable introduction to the varied career paths that lay ahead.
The Areté experience refined my own understanding of law as a vocation, a calling. I left the week inspired and equipped to work diligently toward the end of personal and professional excellence.

A Call to Carry Forth the Gospel in All You Do
To anyone considering Areté Academy, I encourage you to go. Go to grow your faith, expand the vision for your life, and form lasting, priceless relationships. God has called you to make an impact for his kingdom. Areté Academy showed me the path to do that. Thanks to the Areté Academy leaders, I have new lifetime friends and mentors, a theological undergirding for all my endeavors, fun memories to look back on, and a Gospel mission to carry forth.
