BLOGIn Pictures: Students and Nuns Form United Front at the Supreme Court

A priest, a student, and a nun walk into the Supreme Court . . .

If you were anywhere near the Supreme Court last Tuesday, you might have heard a few passersby mumble a variation of the familiar joke. After all, it's not every day that the area in front of the steps of the United States Supreme Court is filled with students and nuns (with the occasional priest to round things out).

The crowd was gathered to rally in support of the petitioners in the case of Zubik v. Burwell, who were inside the Court defending their right to live and operate their religious non-profits according to their beliefs without being punished by the government. And it was truly a beautiful sight.

ADF Media Relations Director Bob Trent was on site for the rally and appreciated the passion and support shown by the different groups. "Throughout the morning, each group would take turns leading the rally. College students led with a unifying cheer followed by hymns and prayers from the nuns," he said.

If you remember, the Zubik case consolidated seven separate cases, involving 37 different parties against the Obamacare HHS mandate.  Alliance Defending Freedom represents five Christian colleges and universities, who cannot, in good conscience, carry abortion-inducing drugs and devices in their insurance plans. Other well-known groups involved in the case are the Little Sisters of the Poor and Priests for Life.

ADF was privileged to host students from two of the schools we’re representing, Geneva College and Oklahoma Wesleyan University, for the day's events.  These students passionately but peacefully participated in the rally—praying, singing, and chanting, with some even giving interviews to the press. They were all there supporting their schools' right to operate in accordance with their faith, and were a tremendous witness to the good work that these schools are doing and should be free to continue to do without government interference.
