I vividly remember my second grade Valentine’s Day.
I received lots of Valentine’s Day cards – you brought one for everyone in the class, as a rule. Some were store bought and others homemade. Most were hastily scribbled on by 7-year-old hands. Others were meticulously crafted (by creative mothers, I suspect).
One in particular stood out to me, though. It had a cartoon character on it and some silly little line. But there it was: “From: Your Secret Admirer.” It wasn’t really anything special. Yet I remember it to this day.
In all the hubbub surrounding Valentine’s Day – the cards, flowers, chocolates, and secret admirers – it’s easy to associate it just with romance. But in doing so, we miss an opportunity to celebrate what is truly special; the uniqueness of marriage.
This Valentine’s Day, our friends at Focus on the Family are encouraging churches and pastors to celebrate marriage. From their website:
Our Honoring Marriage Event kit will help you host a special church-wide celebration that includes all – married couples, singles, youth, and kids. Celebrate marriage in all your services and classes that weekend (or another weekend of your choice) and also host a fun couples date night with the easy to use resources provided in this kit.
In light of a culture and Supreme Court that rejects God’s design for marriage, the Church has an opportunity to reinforce a biblical understanding of marriage and articulate why it matters. And what better time than the “month of love” to discuss the biblical understanding of love and marriage?
