BLOGWhy I Changed My Profile Picture to #DefundPP

By Marissa Mayer Posted on: | September 26, 2015

Ally from Kentucky doesn't usually change her profile picture to show her support for those flavor-of-the-month social causes. As a social media manager, she knows it's sometimes perceived as a "huge no-no." She also knows that in this day and age, publicly supporting the "wrong" or unpopular cause can land you in hot water with those who might disagree with you.

But this time, Ally changed her profile picture anyways.

In a post that wowed and inspired us, Ally wrote:

Being a social media manager many might think this profile picture overlay is a huge no-no. Maybe they are right… this might hurt my career… that "risk" is okay with me. I love people. It doesn't matter who you are, where you came from, what color skin you have, your sexual orientation, your mental state, political views, or who/what you believe in. You have value and purpose. You've had the same amount of value and purpose from the moment of conception. I will unapologetically fight for the unborn, orphaned, widowed, sin-filled, broken, and hurt people until the day I die. Why? Because that's exactly what Christ did for me.

When we reached out to her, Ally was gracious enough to share a little bit more about what inspired her thoughtful post.

"I will always do my best to show kindness and respect to all people," she says. "It can be very difficult to pair conviction with compassion, but when it’s done correctly, meaningful and impactful conversations can take place."

Ally is one of the millions of people who was taken aback by the brutal footage in the undercover Planned Parenthood videos. As a new mom (her daughter is 7 months old and "full of personality, snuggles, and slobbery open-mouthed kisses"), the videos felt that much more personal.

"I was in shock," she admits. "My heart sank deeper with each video. It was difficult and painful to watch. I kept coming back and finding comfort in John 16:33, 'I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world (NLT).' I am thankful to have a God that goes before me and has already overcome this world. He is worthy of our trust."

If Iowa is any indication, the more people know about Planned Parenthood, the more likely they are to support defunding the largest abortion business in America. For this full-time worker, wife, and mom, changing her profile picture is an easy way to show her support for the cause.

“I am grateful for the pro-life organizations who are working hard to shed light, bring change, and give a voice to the unborn," she says. "It’s not an easy task."

That's why social media has become such a valuable tool for raising awareness about important causes like #DefundPP. In seconds, people on Facebook and Twitter can change their profile picture just like Ally did and make their voice heard in support of innocent children who deserve a chance at life.

But this pro knows that social media can be a double-edged sword.

"I love the sense of community that social media offers us," explains Ally. "We have the opportunity to share a single thought or experience for the world to see. By opening up our lives, though, we expose ourselves to praise, criticism, attack, and possibly striving for perfection or worldly acceptance."

But Ally isn't too concerned with all that right now. Her job keeps her busy ("Being a social media manager is 24/7 job."), and she's content to spend her free time with her husband ("I'm head over heels in love. Seriously, he's the greatest.") and daughter, or watching Joanna Gaines remodel houses on the HGTV show Fixer Upper ("I would seriously move to Waco, Texas for her to renovate my house. Bring on the shiplap, crown-molding, recessed lighting and magnolia leaf wreaths! I hope she reads this blog!").

But one thing she's resolved not to do is stay in that comfort zone for too long.

"We weren’t created to stay within our comfort zone," says Ally. "We are not meant to live each day doing the minimum work necessary. We were created by a master designer, A MASTER DESIGNER who purposefully made us! I don’t want to waste His work, effort, or creativity. I desire to live alive! To make His name and love known wherever I go."

It's not always easy to step outside of your comfort zone, especially with your friends, family, and even the entire public watching. But when you do decide to listen to that voice inside of you and step out, there's no going back, at least for Ally.

"I couldn’t tell you the amount of times I’ve ignored God’s promptings. But I can tell you that the times I listened to God’s promptings (like this one)… I was never disappointed!"
