Help People of Faith Prevented from Fostering and Adopting

Imagine feeling a conviction to adopt and care for other children—to love those who don’t even have one parent.

And now imagine that your state is excluding you from adopting any child because you won’t agree to contradict your Christian beliefs—you won’t use inaccurate pronouns, take children to events like Pride parades, and facilitate a child’s access to dangerous procedures like potentially sterilizing puberty blockers.

This is exactly the situation Jessica Bates faces in Oregon.

Oregon officials are preventing Jessica from adopting because they disagree with her Christian beliefs—despite the fact that they otherwise accommodate people of different religious and cultural backgrounds and try to pair children with families who are well suited to each other.

It’s a blatant act of religious discrimination, and it must end.

Sadly, other states are also discriminating against people of faith.

The state of Washington has issued similar requirements that are preventing parents from fostering unless they agree to promote the state’s ideology to children.

And we’re already starting to see the fallout. Despite praise for over nine years of excellent foster care service, Washington state refused to renew Shane and Jenn DeGrosses’ foster care license because they believe that boys cannot become girls and girls cannot become boys.

We are taking legal action and are representing both Jessica and the DeGrosses in order to defend the rights of all believers to follow the God-given call to care for widows and orphans.
